You may swear by morning runs, but your colleague may advise you to start walking for a healthier body. So which one do you choose?
Contrary to popular perception, walking wins this debate hands down, and there are some very good reasons for this. Let’s check out the 5 reasons why walking is a better exercise than running.
1. Walking is safer
If you are terribly overweight and look out of shape, then running or jogging is not a good idea at all.
Running is a high impact exercise, and there is a risk of some severe damage to your feet, ankles and knees from the pounding they will have to endure. I
f you suddenly start running after years of inactivity, there is also the risk of putting too much stress on the heart.
Simply said, running is very dangerous for people who have been leading a sedentary lifestyle for many years.
2. Walking is relaxing
There is probably no one that will deny that walking is, indeed, more relaxing than running. There is something called runner’s high but it usually takes months and months of running practice to experience that.
To put it more simply, running for many isn’t pleasant and isn’t fun. Walking is what we do naturally on a daily basis and can be much more enjoyable.
3. Difficulty finding a partner
Usually, it is much easier to find a walking partner than a running partner. The odds of continuing with an exercise program increases when you have a partner.
Finding someone who is willing to start a walking regimen with you is much easier than finding someone that is equally interested in starting a running workout.
4. It is easier to stick with a walking program
Many people start with running only to give up after a few weeks. There are many reasons, but the most common are shin pain, injuries and of course, fatigue.
There is a better chance of persevering when you take up walking than running.
5. Walking burns more calories than running
It is hard to believe but walking indeed burns more calories than running. Brisk walking utilizes more energy than a slow jog or running.
A majority of people who want to lose weight won’t want to run but would be willing to walk at a faster pace than normal. As a result, they will be able to burn a lot of calories and stick with a program.
When all is said and done, it all boils down to personal preference when choosing between walking and running as a form of exercise.
For many people, fitness walking is a better choice than jogging or running. It is often easier to achieve weight loss goals with a walking routine than a running program.
