Most of us have been told as children that eating this long, slender, tasty vegetable will make us smarter and help us to get good grades in class.
That might just have been a story that our mothers made up to help us eat every vegetable possible.
But it is true that consuming this healthy vegetable is beneficial to our body. What vegetable are we talking about?
You must have guessed by now. Of course, we are referring to the vegetable either called Okra or ladies finger.
Okra is a plant that produces these green vegetables which also contain pods. These edible green pods are highly valued. In many Indian languages, it is known by the variants of the name ‘bhindi’.
The plant grows in tropical, sub-tropical and temperate climates. It also grows well in warm climates. The plants tend to decay if planted in very cold regions. It is called Okra in African countries as it is derived from the Nigerian language. Outside of Africa, it goes by the name of ladies fingers.
The plant grows all through the year and rises to two metres tall. It belongs to the same family as cotton, cocoa and hibiscus. The leaves span up to 20 cms long and have broad lobes in them.
The plant also has flowers, which are 4-8 cms in diameter. Each flower has 5-7 yellow or white petals. The fruit of this plant is in the shape of a capsule and grows up to 18 cms long. The fruit also contains many seeds.

- While buying okra, always look at the fresh, green ones that appear tender. If you try to break it in half, it should easily break, without much trouble. That’s how you tell a tender okra from a non-tender one. Do not buy too much in bulk as Okra does not remain as nutritious when frozen.
- If you are considering freezing it in the refrigerator, then always put them in a plastic bag with holes in it for the movement of air. Alternatively, you could use vegetable pouches, available in plastic material to store the same. Make sure you reduce the temperature of the refrigerator as too much cold spoils the vegetables and drains it of its nutrition content.
- The good thing about eating okra is that it is one of the most simplest vegetable to make. Sautéing okra does not require much oil. You can either simply stir fry it with as little oil as you can use and sprinkle a little salt to taste. Alternately, you can also make the same by also adding a dash of tomatoes, onions, capsicums, potatoes or any vegetables that you can find. You can also add spices as per your taste.
